Abstract
Objective: In present study shade dried bark of Diospyros malabarica was selected having medicinally important bioactive constituents is reviewed with special emphasis on the biological activities. Objective of present study was to screen Diospyros malabarica bark extract for anti-inflammatory activity. Material and methods: Ethanol extract of Diospyros malabarica bark was tested for anti-inflammatory activity using Carrageenan-induced hind paw edema and Cotton pellet induced granuloma models. Effect was observed by measurement of paw edema and granuloma formation. Results: The paw edema of rats were increased progressively and reached its maximum after 120 min of carrageenan injection. The ethanol extract of Diospyros malabarica bark was reduced carrageenan-induced inflammation significantly (P<0.05) at dose of 300 mg/kg as compared to the control group and standard, but reduced low percent at a dose of 200 mg/kg. Ethanol extract of Diospyros malabarica bark was significantly reduced (P<0.05) the granuloma induced by cotton pellets in rats in a dose-dependent manner. Ethanol extract at the doses of 300 mg/kg was showed maximum reduction on the granuloma tissue formation on implanted cotton pellets with inhibition of 42.55% which was compared with Indomethacin (10 mg/kg) produced inhibition 41.12%. The present results were indicated that ethanol extracts of Diospyros malabarica bark was significantly inhibited edema and granuloma mass in cotton pellet study. This leads to the dilation of arterioles and venules and may increase vascular permeability. Conclusion: The results were showed significant anti-inflammatory activity at 300 mg/kg dose of ethanol extracts. The results can be concluded that the significant activity may be due to presence of flavonoids in ethanol extract of Diospyros malabarica bark.
