Abstract

Aim: The objective of the study was to compare the synergistic antibacterial activity of ciprofloxacin (CF) in presence of selected ethanolic herbal extracts and cow urine distillate. Material and methods: In this study antibacterial activity of ethanolic extracts of pepper (P), turmeric (T), zinger (Z), drumstick (D) and cow urine distillate (CUD) were tested against ATCC strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumonia and clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and E-coli by cup plate diffusion method. Results: Results showed that the test samples did not show any antimicrobial activity alone. However in combination with drug showed significant activity. Amongst the test samples combination of CF and P, CF and CUD, CF and Z and CF and T showed 5 to 50% increase activity when compared to the control. Further, tablets produced in combination with drug and test samples showed increased antimicrobial efficiency than the CF drug alone. Further, no drug excipient interaction was recorded. Conclusion: It can be concluded that ethanolic extracts of P, T, Z and CUD acts as bio-enhancers and use of such bioenhancers along with drug could improve the efficiency and can minimize the dose related adverse effects. Bioenhancer activity order found in pepper > CUD > turmeric > zinger. All bioenhancer are more active in Klebsilla pneumonae than Escherichia coli, staphylococcus areus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
