Abstract
Objective: The objective of the present study was to perform pharmacological screening of Martynia annua roots extract for antiulcer activity. Material and methods: Ethanolic extract of the Martynia annua roots investigated for antiulcer effect using Ethanol induced gastric mucosal damage in rats. Antiulcer effect was assessed by ulcer index, acidity and histological observation. Results: The rise in pH shown by alcoholic extracts 300 mg/kg was 4.2. Omeprazole, a standard drug raised the pH to 4.6, which is statistically significant (p<0.05). This is more potent than the extracts used. Gastric total acidity was increased to (714.06±17.62 mEq/litre) in control animals. Ethanol extract (300 mg/kg.) was showed significant decrease in total acidity (321.54±10.39 mEq/litre) compared to control. The ulcer index in control animals was 32.45±1.05. Ethanol extract (300 mg/kg) was showed 14.26±0.38 significantly reduced the ulcer index (p<0.05) as compared to control. Omeprazole, a standard anti-ulcer drug showed ulcer index 17.22±0.43. Conclusion: Ethanolic extract of the Martynia annua roots was showed potent antiulcer effect in Ethanol induced ulcer model. Ulcer healing was confirmed by significant reduction of ulcer index and acidity. These effects were observed may be due to presence of polyphenolic components in ethanol extract of Martynia annua roots.
